To deepen students' professional competence, broaden their cross-cultural horizons, and enhance their academic expressiveness, the SFL successfully held a lecture themed "Cultivating Cross-Cultural Thinking · Tempering Academic Expressiveness" as part of the "One-Stop" community activity at the Cuiliu Community Activity Room at 16:30 on the afternoon of December 23, 2025. The lecture was specially delivered by Prof. Liu Yanshi, Vice Dean (in charge of the overall work) of the SFL, who systematically interpreted the key points of professional learning and guidelines for participating in competitions for the students of the school.

Centering on the demand for foreign language talent cultivation under the background of the new liberal arts, Prof. Liu Yanshi put forward the core orientation of the "trinity" model: "language + major + literacy". He emphasized that students should solidify their basic skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing, while delving deep into regional and country studies to gain a thorough understanding of the cultures and dynamics of English-speaking countries. Highlighting the importance of critical thinking ability, he encouraged students to engage in critical and creative thinking and avoid over-reliance on artificial intelligence. He advocated taking language as a tool to strengthen cross-cultural communication competence, practicing the "three essential requirements" of "patriotic sentiments, global vision and professional expertise", and telling Chinese stories well to convey Chinese concepts. In addition, he clarified the cultivation paths for key competencies such as autonomous learning, practical application, innovation and entrepreneurship, and lifelong learning, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary integration and personalized development.

During the activity, Prof. Liu Yanshi elaborated on the core competition system for foreign language majors, covering key provincial and above-level competitions such as the Cross-Cultural Competence Competition, the Business Professional Practical Ability Competition, the Normal University Students' Teaching Ability Competition, the "FLTRP · Guocai Cup" "Understanding Contemporary China" Series Competitions, and the "Telling Chinese Stories Well" Short Video Competition. He shared the school's remarkable achievements in competitions in recent years—all 8 participating students won awards in the "Understanding Contemporary China" Series Competitions, and the school has also repeatedly secured provincial-level awards in short video and cross-cultural competitions. He provided competition participation suggestions for students of different grades: junior students can take part in basic competitions such as the Vocabulary Master Contest to consolidate their vocabulary competence, while senior students can focus on professional competitions and form teams to participate in interdisciplinary collaborative competitions, so as to test their learning outcomes through competitions.

Prof. Liu Yanshi pointed out that the school provides diversified competition support for students: it has equipped students with the bilingual "Understanding Contemporary China" series textbooks, set up special training teams for interpretation and debate, and implemented the undergraduate tutorial system and the mechanism of senior students helping junior ones. He required study committee members and student cadres to play their role as a bridge, doing a good job in transmitting competition information, organizing selections, and facilitating communication and feedback. He encouraged students to make full use of on-campus resources and online platforms, strengthen their foundation through extensive reading, watching and writing, take the initiative to participate in practical and scientific research projects, and organically integrate course learning with competition preparation, so as to achieve the coordinated improvement of competence, literacy and knowledge.

This activity clarified the inherent connection between learning and competitions for foreign language majors, defined the direction and path for capacity enhancement, effectively stimulated students' enthusiasm for participating in competitions and tempering their skills, and laid a solid foundation for the school's academic atmosphere construction and the improvement of talent cultivation quality.
