In an ingenious approach, Prof. Du vividly illustrated the evolutionary logic of technology from "functionally viable" and "practically applicable" to "user-friendly" by means of three military-historical images—the Yuan Dynasty fire lance, the Ming Dynasty three-stage shooting tactic, and the World War I Maxim machine gun. This naturally led to an exploration of the development stages of GenAI in foreign language education, laying a clear analytical framework for subsequent discussions.
At the lecture, Prof. Du first started with the structural predicaments faced by current foreign language teaching. Drawing on cutting-edge literature, he systematically elaborated on the five core roles of GenAI in language learning as well as its advantages in teaching practice. He particularly pointed out that GenAI can effectively alleviate learning anxiety, expand authentic pragmatic scenarios, and promote the extension of learning from classrooms to daily-life contexts.
Based on solid empirical research, Professor Du further shared his important findings derived from the topic modeling analysis of over 7,000 human-machine dialogues: GenAI not only significantly improves learners' language skills, but also exerts a profound impact on their self-image construction, learning sense of belonging and future aspirations. This reflects the paradigm shift of technology from "tool-based assistance" to "psychological development". He emphasized that the true value of GenAI lies in fostering a new foreign language learning paradigm that is more dynamic, participatory and humanized.
In the concluding part, Prof. Du further noted that this transformation has driven the shift of teachers' roles from knowledge transmitters to learning experience designers. Teachers need to focus on assuming the responsibilities of thinking cultivation and humanistic care, so as to explore a new landscape of foreign language education that integrates technology-driven development with humanistic care in the context of technological empowerment, and uphold the humanistic core of education.
During the interactive session, participating teachers actively raised questions on topics such as the theoretical paths and ethical boundaries of GenAI application. Professor Du responded with specific cases, creating a lively atmosphere for communication. From multiple dimensions including disciplinary concepts, methods and roles, this lecture has pointed out the direction and path for teaching innovation for foreign language educators in the intelligent era, and is of great enlightening significance for promoting the in-depth development of "AI + foreign language education" and the digital transformation of the discipline.
