Prof. Liao Qiaoyun conducted an extensive and in-depth analysis around four aspects: the connotation, theoretical exploration, empirical research, and prospects of interdisciplinary language studies. When elaborating on the connotation of interdisciplinary language research, Professor Liao pointed out that language research is inherently interdisciplinary, and linguistics is a discipline integrating humanistic and scientific attributes. The starting point and ultimate goal of linguistic research is language itself, and under the background of new liberal arts construction, interdisciplinary language research can effectively adopt research methods from neuroscience. In analyzing the theories of interdisciplinary language research, Prof. Liao noted that fractal theory, quantum mechanics theory, duality theory, causal implication theory, and other theories have extensively and profoundly influenced linguistic studies. In recent years, Prof. Liao and her research team have produced a series of high-quality scientific research achievements by applying the aforementioned theories. When introducing the empirical exploration of interdisciplinary language research, Prof. Liao stated that interdisciplinary empirical language research can adopt electroencephalogram (EEG) experimental methods. Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) have brought new entry points and opportunities for linguistic research, especially for semantic-rhetorical discourse research, and this technology can be applied to studies in phonetics, semantics, syntax, and other fields. Prof. Liao emphasized that ERPs research on the neural mechanisms of semantic-rhetorical construal requires clear research directions, research objectives, and detailed research plans. When looking forward to the future of interdisciplinary language research, Prof. Liao stressed that non-literal meaning research is a topic worthy of special attention. In the process of interdisciplinary language research, theoretical and empirical explorations should be integrated; comparative studies of Chinese and foreign linguistic phenomena, conceptual metaphor, generative artificial intelligence, large language models, and factors influencing learning are all areas worthy of further investigation.
In the interactive session, Prof. Liao Qiaoyun proposed that engaging in scientific research requires adhering to the "Four More Principles"—read more, study more, write more, and practice more. Meanwhile, Prof. Liao patiently answered questions raised by the school's teachers regarding topics such as the mechanism of rhetorical application, the connections and differences between artificial intelligence language and natural language, and interdisciplinary language research methods.
This lecture injected vitality into breaking disciplinary barriers, promoting interdisciplinary research, and deepening the integration of theory and empiricism. It provided a platform for learning and exchange for the school's teachers, broadened their academic horizons, and enhanced their understanding of the theories and empirical methods of interdisciplinary language research. By injecting new impetus into the school's development, this lecture will undoubtedly exert a positive impact on talent cultivation, teacher development, and disciplinary progress.
